Head of School

Dr. Scott Lisea earned a B.A. degree in economics and business from Westmont, graduating with the highest recognition, the Kenneth Monroe Award for Outstanding Male Student. He holds both a master’s and a doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. After graduating from Westmont he served as an area director for Young Life in San Diego, then returned to Santa Barbara as Young Life Regional Director (directing two major regions at the same time). After 23 years overseeing significant growth with Young Life, he joined the faculty at Oaks Christian School as Associate Head for Spiritual Life. In 2014-2015 he served as Acting Head of School at Oaks Christian. Scott Lisea joined the Providence faculty as Head of School in July 2015. 


RockneyScott Rockney
Associate Head of School / Upper School Principal

Scott Rockney came to Providence in 2016 after 10 years with  Oaks Christian School (Westlake Village, CA), where he served most recently as Middle School Principal. At Oaks, he worked very closely with the high school administration to ensure students were prepared for a successful academic experience in high school and college. Mr. Rockney played a major leadership role designing a new academic building at Oaks, researching physical architecture and its impact on student learning and school culture and best practices using space and design to improve student learning. 

Mr. Rockney holds a master’s degree in educational administration from California State University at Northridge and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and culture, also from CSU Northridge. Before going to Oaks Christian, he taught Spanish and served as dean of students in a large public high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Scott and his wife, Sarah, are the parents of three children: sons Luke and Gray and daughter Sophie. All three children are enrolled in Providence’s Lower School. 


Matthew KnolesMatt Knoles  
Lower School Principal

Matthew Knoles taught for 10 years in public elementary schools in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Ventura before joining the Providence administration as Assistant Head of Lower School in 2014. He was named Lower School Principal in 2016. He holds a masters degree in Educational Policy and Leadership and a preliminary administrative credential (California State University Northridge, 2010). He completed the California teaching credential program (Chapman University, 2004) after earning a bachelors degree in sociology (UCSB, 2000). 

On Sundays, Knoles serves Santa Barbara Community Church as a worship leader. He and his wife, Krista, have three children, Tully, Tessa, and Beck, who are part of the Providence family.


Caitlyn Goebel

Patton-WebPreschool Director

Our founding preschool director, Caitlyn (Patton) Goebel came to Providence from the El Montecito Early School, where she taught since 2011. She has been a preschool educator since 2006, serving as a teacher and assistant childcare director in Orange County before returning to her native Santa Barbara. Mrs. Goebel earned a B.S. degree in child development with a minor in psychology from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo.

Diane Horvath
Director of Tuition Assistance

Diane Horvath directed the the Financial Aid Office at Westmont College for more than 30 years before joining the former Providence Hall staff in 2011. Her wealth of experience is an asset to the Providence community.


Howen175x230Marshall Howen
Business Manager

Marshall Howen is an experienced business executive, the founder of  one company and a member of the executive team of another. He is an experienced organizational consultant and has been employed as business manager for an asset management firm. A member of the Santa Barbara community since his graduation from Westmont in 1987 with a degree in business and economics, he has has contributed on a variety of levels directly related to business development and management. He was a member of the founding boards of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, ELMO Early School, and Young Life. He has served in leadership at both Santa Barbara Community Church and Free Methodist Church of Santa Barbara. He joined the Providence administrative team in 2016.

Counsel for Annual Giving

Trina Hudson of Hudson Consulting is counsel to Providence on Annual Giving. A resident of Santa Barbara for more than 30 years, Trina brings a knowledge and love of the community and its people to her work. Before joining Hudson Consulting, Trina was director of annual giving at Westmont College. During her tenure at Westmont she also served as assistant director of alumni and parent relations. Prior to serving at Westmont, Trina worked in patient services at MedBridge and in event services for Elings Park Foundation. Trina graduated from Westmont in 1987 with a B.A. degree in English.

Director of Upper School Admission (7-12)

Joyce Luy was Director of Admission at Westmont College for more than 30 years prior to joining the former Providence Hall administration in 2011. She holds a B.A. in English from San Diego State University and a M.A. in Higher Education Administration from the University of California Santa Barbara.

 


Rottman_E175x230Elaine Rottman
Director of Advancement

Elaine Rottman has worked in independent and Christian school communications, marketing, and development since 1981. She has edited and produced award-winning publications for Brookfield Academy (Brookfield, WI) and the Marva Collins College Preparatory School (now Milwaukee College Preparatory School). She joined the former Providence Hall administration in 2010. Ms. Rottman earned a B.A. degree in English at Calvin College, with a special interest in journalism. Besides her work at Providence, she is the copy editor of Radix Magazine and serves on the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission Women’s Auxiliary and the Channel Islands YMCA Good Friday Breakfast Planning Committee.

Athletic Director

Steve Stokes holds a degree in kinesiology from California State University, Dominguez Hills. He joined the Patriots coaching staff as varsity boys basketball coach in the 2014-2015 season. Prior to coming to Providence, Stokes was associate head coach at Royal High School (Simi Valley) for four seasons. He has been coaching high school basketball since 2003, compiling over 250 career wins in the process. Coaching highlights include the two-time CIF Championship Finalist appearances, two State Championship appearances (including an appearance in the 2013 California State Final Four), four-time league “Coach of the Year,” and having his team named LA Times “Program on the Rise.”

Director of  Lower School Admission (Preschool-6)

Angie West has more than 20 years of experience in special event planning through her business, Angela West Productions, with diverse clients ranging from corporations to non-profits. Mrs. West came to Providence from Westmont College, where she was conference services and campus scheduling manager for three years. She earned a B.A. degree from the American College of Applied Arts in London, England. She and her husband, Jamie, are the parents of two children, Jake and Lauren, both Providence Upper School students.


Becca Gill
B GillUpper School (7-12) Admission Assistant

Becca Gill earned a B.S. degree in Recreational Studies from James Madison University and a teaching credential from California State University Los Angeles. After teaching in the LA area, she joined the former Providence Hall faculty in January 2012 as Director of Campus Life, serving in that position through 2016. She co-leads the Beyond the Classroom and OLI (Outdoor Leadership Institute) trips with her husband, Andy Gill. They are the parents of a future Providence Patriot.
