Steve Stokes
Athletic Director and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach

As a student-athlete, Steve Stokes was an all-league player who was also named Defensive Player of the Year all four years. These achievements helped Coach Stokes land his first high school coaching job the day after he graduated from high school. Over the course of two years he was able to take them from a 94-game (five-year) losing streak to a league championship.

This success led to Stokes’s next head varsity coaching role, taking over a program who had never won a game in school history—the longest active losing streak in the state of California. In year one they not only broke the streak, but were able to qualify for CIF playoffs.

That brought him to coaching the varsity team at his high school alma mater. They were struggling mightily prior to his return, but once again he turned the program around quickly. The team went to back-to-back CIF Championship Games and were one of the top programs in the state of California, advancing to the CIF State Final 4.

Since Stokes came to Providence in 2013, our boys basketball team has been ranked in the Top 10 in CIF for four years in a row, being as high as the #2 ranked team in CIF. The team was a three-time undefeated league champion (2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018), and on top of being highly ranked on the court and winning league championships, the 2016-17 boys basketball program was celebrated at Angels Stadium for having the highest team GPA both in the CIF Southern Section as well as CIF State!

This is Coach Stokes’s 17th year as a high school basketball coach. He has been named league “Coach of the Year” seven times and also Ventura County “Coach of the Year.”

“The most impactful thing in my 17 years as a coach is the relationships I have developed with my student-athletes, helping them develop on the court and as people in life,” he said. “It is such an incredible experience to stay so close with every alumnus I have been fortunate enough to get the chance to coach. After 17 years it has been fun to watch them develop into great adults, husbands, fathers, and people passionate about what they do in life and in their faith. That is everything! It’s a great day to be a Patriot!”
