Performing Arts

Performing arts include music and drama offerings.

Performing artists have their choice of two chorale ensembles. They present a worshipful Lessons and Carols program at Christmas, a spring concert, and perform at school and community events and in choral festivals.

Music courses offered at Providence include:

  • Providence Chorale
  • Chamber Ensemble
  • Laudate Youth Chorale (open to community members in grades 5-8)

Theater is offered as an extracurricular activity, with professional assistance from the Santa Barbara theater community. Past productions have included fully-staged musicals and drama performances and dinner-theater style performances.

Performing Arts Mission Statement

The Providence Performing Arts department seeks to teach students to worship God through engagement with music as a spiritual, communal, and intellectual subject.

Spiritual: Music has a long and rich history in Christian worship. Music’s ability to transport performers and listeners alike has the potential to draw us into closer relationship with God both through formal worship services and the performance of any music with excellence and thanksgiving.

Psalm 104:33: I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Communal: We make music as part of a rich community: singers young and old, ensembles small and large, concerts grand and intimate, all provide us with the opportunity to be part of something larger as we contribute towards creating meaningful and authentic music.

Psalm 34: 3: Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.

Intellectual: Music requires thoughtful focus and the rewards of intentional practice are many. Not only do we grow in our understanding of technical details and historical context, but we grow in our aesthetic awareness of how to truthfully and excellently create beauty.

1 Corinthians 14:15: So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
