Kylie Brown Named National Merit Commended

October 13, 2017 by Elaine Rottman

Senior Kylie Brown has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. She is among the top three percent of scorers throughout the nation being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

A student at Providence, A Santa Barbara Christian School since kindergarten, Kylie is planning a career in either electrical or aerospace engineering. She is a second-year student in the Providence Engineering Academy. She discovered her love for math and science in high school physics and chemistry classes with Mr. Taylor Hurt. “I didn’t like those subjects before, but he made them fun and I grew to love them,” she said.

While Kylie was surprised to learn she had been named a Commended Student, she felt comfortable taking the PSAT and SAT tests upon which the award is based “because I am used to long tests.” She credits her education at Providence with preparing her for testing, homework, and general time management.

This scholar-athlete manages to play on the volleyball team, lead the student body as community service prefect, maintain top academic performance, and work a part-time job–all with a brilliant smile lighting up her face.

She is applying to eight colleges and universities in California with engineering programs. Any one of them would be fortunate to have her as a student.
