A New Doctor in the House

December 17, 2018 by Elaine Rottman

Matthew Roy, Providence Director of Performing Arts, was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Musicology by the University of California at Santa Barbara on December 14, 2018—the same day as his debut as director of the Providence Lessons & Carols Advent worship service featuring three school choirs.

His doctoral dissertation is on the emergence of children’s music in the 19th-century and how the romantic ideals of that time period endure today. His desire to pursue studies in musicology was ignited in an undergraduate Westmont College class on the history of Western music. He graduated from Westmont with a bachelor’s degree in piano performance before earning a master’s degree from Eastern Washington University and enrolling in the doctoral program at UCSB in 2012.

Dr. Roy joined the Providence faculty this fall. He brings a variety of musical skills to his position as Providence’s Director of Performing Arts. As the music director of El Montecito Presbyterian Church, he gained a wealth of experience in choral direction and vocal pedagogy. He is also a composer, arranger, and instrumentalist, performing on piano and organ as well as various folk instruments for the Folk Orchestra of Santa Barbara.

In addition to spending time with his wife, Jess, and their two children, he enjoys urban hikes, foreign languages, hearty food, and dry humor.

Mr. Scott Rockney, Associate Head of School and Dr. Roy’s principal, says “we are so excited for Matthew and so pleased to have someone of his caliber on our faculty.”
