Creating a New Song

November 13, 2019 by Elaine Rottman

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His steadfast love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1

As soon as Mr. Matt Knoles, Principal of Lower School, heard this year’s theme verse, Psalm 136:1, he knew he wanted to use it in a song that would be easy for children to sing. He turned to his song-writing partner, third-grade teacher Mr. Andy White, and in one day they had written the lyrics and melody for the very catchy “He Is Good.”

“The best songs come quickly,” said Andy. “God gifts them to you.”

The song has truly been a gift to students, who took to it instantly and sing it loudly and joyfully.

Matt wrote most of the lyrics and intentionally made sure to use God-focused language—using names for God found in Scripture, such as “King of Kings,”—and avoiding “I” and “me” references, thereby bucking a self-focused trend he finds in many contemporary worship music songs.

The positive response to “He Is Good” has the Knoles/White song-writing duo motivated to write more songs for the Providence community.
