Providence congratulates seniors Emma Gobbell and Chloe Herdrich for the scholarships they received from the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. They were among 25 local student artists honored with $2500 renewable college scholarships, selected by a panel of judges who reviewed the portfolios of 70 applicants. Awards were presented in a ceremony on January 24 and the artists’ work was on display in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art for three days.

Emma Gobbell hopes to attend Georgetown University and major in biological science. Inspired by her mother, a professional painter, Emma gravitated toward art at an early age. She prefers to work with oil paints but also enjoys drawing with charcoal and pencil. “My portfolio focuses on the simplicity and love put into a plain, school lunch, inspired by everything my mother has done for me throughout life, guiding me as an artist and as a daughter,” says Emma.

“I appreciate Emma’s nod to honoring her mom,” says Mr. James Daly, Providence middle and high school art teacher. “The recognition and credit Emma has shown her mom is very special.”

Chloe Herdrich traces her interest in painting to an art class she took in junior high school, and her passion has only intensified. Chloe’s preferred medium is oil paint.

“What I especially appreciate about Chloe,” Mr. Daly says, “is she has built a skill set to express herself and to comment on social issues meaningful to her.”

“I believe that every work of art has the potential to convey a deeper meaning to the viewer, and it is my job as an artist to spark that internal dialogue,” Chloe says. She plans to study economics in preparation for a career in law or politics.
